In homage to Miya Marcano, a 19-year-old university student who was killed by an employee at the apartment building where she resided in 2021, “Miya’s Law” – will go into effect on July 1, 2022, and will increase tenant security in apartment blocks by requiring landowners of nontransient or transitory apartment buildings in the state to necessitate employees to undertake background screenings as a mandatory requirement.
The law, which was unanimously approved by the Florida House and Senate, mandates that landlords of apartment buildings require their employees to submit to background checks conducted by consumer reporting agencies (CRAs) in accordance with Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
